Since that edition the competition was held every four years with the exception of the 12 year period (1938-1950) of the Second World War. For the first nine editions (1930-1970) the price was the Rimet Cup, named after the father of the competition - Jules Rimet. In the 1970 the cup was won by Brazil for the third time and therefore they won the cup for ever. Since then a new cup was made - the FIFA cup.
For the first time, the World Cup is being hosted by South Africa. This will be the first time that the World Cup will be held in the African continent. After Europe - with ten editions (1934, 1938, 1954, 1958, 1966, 1974, 1982, 1990, 1998, 2006), South America - with six editions (1930, 1950, 1962, 1970, 1978, 1986), North America - with one edition (1994) and Asia - with one edition (2002), Africa will be the fifth continent to host this competition. |
