History:
WORLD CUP 2010
FIFA is once again organizing the football World Cup, a competition which joins all the national teams in the world in trying to qualify for the final stages of the tournament, which then crowns one nation as the World Champion - the current World Champions are Italy. The 2010 will be the 19th edition of the competition. The first edition of the World Cup was held in 1930 in Uruguay but a lot of European nations boycotted the competition on the grounds that it was not being held in Europe (football's birth place) and due to the long distance to travel by sea to arrive at the hosting venues (at least a month travel).

Since that edition the competition was held every four years with the exception of the 12 year period (1938-1950) of the Second World War. For the first nine editions (1930-1970) the price was the Rimet Cup, named after the father of the competition - Jules Rimet. In the 1970 the cup was won by Brazil for the third time and therefore they won the cup for ever. Since then a new cup was made - the FIFA cup.

For the first time, the World Cup is being hosted by South Africa. This will be the first time that the World Cup will be held in the African continent. After Europe - with ten editions (1934, 1938, 1954, 1958, 1966, 1974, 1982, 1990, 1998, 2006), South America - with six editions (1930, 1950, 1962, 1970, 1978, 1986), North America - with one edition (1994) and Asia - with one edition (2002), Africa will be the fifth continent to host this competition.

The mascot of this edition is the leopard ZAKUMI having the Green and Yellow colours of the South African National team. The name comes from 'ZA' the international abbreviation for South Africa and 'KUMI' meaning 'ten' for 2010. It was designed by South African Andries Odendaal. Controversy has broke out over the production of the figurines of Zakumi, which were produced in China instead of South Africa.
